북 아시아 지역 회장단 인터뷰: 로버트 시 게이 장로

—회장님께서 이 지역을 감리하신 지 4개월이 조금 지났습니다. 이 지역 회원들과 소통하면서 어떤 인상을 받았는지 말씀해 주시겠습니까?
북 아시아 지역 회장단의 로버트 시 게이 회장: 이 지역의 회원들은 세상의 소금입니다. 그들은 구주와 가족에 대한 크나큰 사랑과 선을 행하려는 커다란 소망을 지니고 있습니다. 저는 우리 전 지역의 사람들에게 배어있는 대단한 겸손과 친절을 보면서 놀라움을 금치 못합니다. 일본과 한국, 미크로네시아 섬에 사는 사람들은 참으로 친절하고 선합니다. 또한, 너무도 예의 바르고, 기꺼이 봉사하려 합니다. 모두가 선한 일을 행하려 노력하지요. 저는 이곳에서 지내는 것이 정말 좋고, 그들을 참으로 사랑합니다. 우리 회원들은 제 아내와 제가 여기에 온 후로 오로지 커다란 친절과 사랑만을 보여주었습니다.
—이 지역을 감리하도록 부름받으셨을 때 있었던 일에 관해 이야기해주시겠어요?
게이 회장: 아이어링 회장님은 지난 3월 연차 대회 직전, 제가 지역 회장으로 봉사하도록 부름을 주셨습니다. 흥미롭게도, 그분이 제 아내와 제게 부름을 주시기 한 달 전에, 저는 솔트레이크에 있는 사무실에서 제가 이곳으로 오도록 부름을 받으리라는 강한 느낌을 받았습니다. 그날 저녁 저는 아내에게 제가 받은 느낌을 말하고, 도쿄에 살면서 북 아시아 지역을 담당하도록 임무 지명이 변경되리라 생각하는 이유를 이야기했습니다. 한 달 후에 아이어링 회장님이 부름을 제의하셨을 때, 저는 제가 받았던 느낌에 대한 경험을 말씀드렸습니다. 아이어링 회장님은 진실로 하나님께서 그분의 교회를 총괄하며, 이끌고 인도하신다고 말씀하셨습니다.
아이어링 회장님은 저희에게 부름을 준 후 이런 말씀을 하셨습니다. “이 지역은 제게 매우 특별한 곳입니다. 수년 전, 저는 일본에 관해 예언을 했거든요.” 그러고 나서 그분은 그 예언에 관한 기억을 곧바로 떠올려 인용하면서 이 지역에서 교회가 거대한 성장을 이룰 때가 오리라는 느낌을 어떻게 받았는지 말씀해 주셨습니다. 그분은 이곳 회원들이 자신의 빛과 목소리를 세상에 비추어 더 열심히 참여함으로써 성장이 이루어지리라 믿는다고 하셨습니다. 그분은 주님께서 당신의 말씀을 이루려 하신다며 매우 강하게 확신하셨습니다. 그분과 함께 한 자리에서, 저는 제가 이곳으로 부름을 받은 중요한 이유가 바로 이 예언이 성취되도록 돕기 위해서라는 영의 속삭임을 강하게 느꼈습니다. 돌이켜 생각해보면 아주 경이로운 대화였습니다.
—그 말씀을 들으니 제3니파이에 나오는 내용이 생각나네요. 예수 그리스도의 탄생을 알리는 표적을 보았던 사람들이 33년 후에 그분을 만나게 되지요. 그들 중에는 구주께서 그들의 땅을 방문하실 즈음에 성인이 된 세대가 있었어요. 아마도 그들은 어렸을 때부터 마음속으로 계시된 예언을 알고 기억했을 것 같아요.
게이 회장: 저는 아이어링 회장님이 이 지역에 일어날 성장에 관해 받은 느낌을 1998년에 선교사들에게 처음으로 말씀하셨다는 점이 매우 흥미롭다고 생각합니다. 당시 그분은 다음 세대의 선교사들을 통해 이 예언이 뿌리내리게 되리라고 말씀하셨습니다. 지금이 바로 그 세대입니다. 회장님이 한 예언은 주님이 주시는 예언의 방식과 흡사합니다. 주님께서는 니파이인들에게 그러하셨듯이, 종종 어떤 일이 일어날지 말씀해 주신 후에, 이를 위해 대비하고 준비할 시간을 마련해 주십니다. 저는 주께서 수년 전 북 아시아 지역에서 그분의 종을 통해 말씀을 전하여 사람들의 마음을 준비시키고 우리가 지금 일할 구심점을 세우셨다고 믿습니다. 하지만 우리는 모두 준비의 시간이 끝났음을 인식해야 합니다. 이제는 행해야 할 때입니다. 그것이 주께서 원하시는 바입니다. 우리가 그분이 서두르시는 사업을 돕는 도구가 될 때입니다.
그러나 우리는 이 일이 비단 선교사나 회원들 어느 한쪽의 노력만으로는 이루어지지 않는다는 점을 알아야 합니다. 우리는 모두 다 함께 일해야 합니다. 주께서 이 지역에서 이루시고자 하는 바를 성취하려면 회원과 선교사 둘 다 필요하기 때문입니다.
—우리가 하나로 단합하여 함께 일하면 무엇을 어떻게 성취할 수 있습니까?
게이 회장: 주께서는 살아있든 죽었든지 간에 그분의 모든 자녀가 복음의 축복을 누리길 원하십니다. 주께서 이를 성취하시도록 도우려면 우리는 주께서 이루고자 하시는 사업에서 비전으로 하나가 되어야 합니다. 구약 전서의 잠언에는 이러한 말씀이 나옵니다. “묵시가 없으면 백성이 방자히 행하[느니라]” 우리 개개인은 주님의 사업에 관한 비전과, 이 시기에 우리를 위한 계획을 알고 그 안에서 하나가 되어야만 합니다.
오늘날 우리는 복음을 전파해야 합니다. 경전에는 모든 회원에게 던지는 다음과 같은 질문이 나와 있습니다. “너희는 어떠한 것에 성임되었더냐?” 바꿔 말하면, 우리가 교회의 충실한 회원이 된 후 주께서는 우리에게 무엇을 기대하십니까? 그분은 그 질문에 영으로 그분의 복음을 전파하는 것이라고 대답하셨습니다. 이제 여러분 자신에게 물어보십시오. “그분의 복음을 전파한다는 것은 어떤 의미인가?” 저는 우리가 그분의 진리를 가르치는 교사와 그분의 사명을 증거하는 증인이 되어 다른 사람들도 그렇게 행하도록 권유해야 한다는 의미라고 생각합니다. 요즈음 저희는 북 아시아 지역에 있는 모든 회원과 선교사에게 그분의 신성한 진리를 나누고, 구주와 그분의 사업에 관해 증거하며, 다른 모든 이들이 그리스도께 나아오도록 권유하라고 요청하고 있습니다. 이런 연유로, 지역 계획 중 비전의 첫 마디가 바로 “모두가 그리스도께 나아오”라고 되어 있습니다.
교회 회원인 우리는 아브라함의 자녀입니다. 그러므로, 우리는 복음을 나누어야 하는 성약 아래에 있습니다. 지역 계획의 비전을 우리가 다른 이들을 그리스도께 나아오도록 권유하고 기록상 회원만이 아닌 모두가 개심하도록 권유해야 한다는 우리의 성약을 이루는 일이라고 단순히 생각해봅시다. 우리는 복음이 모두의 마음속 깊이 뿌리를 내리도록 도와야 합니다. 그렇게 될 때, 복음대로 생활하는 것은 의무나 부담이라기보다 기쁨이 됩니다. 복음이 마음속 깊이 뿌리내린 사람들은 복음의 약속을 찾고 느끼며 이해합니다. 그들은 영이 주는 위로를 받습니다. 우리가 진정으로 복음에 따라 생활하고 복음을 나눌 때, 주께서는 한 명 한 명에게 크나큰 축복과 약속을 주십니다. 그들은 보호받을 것이며, 그분께서 [그들] 앞서 나아가겠다고 약속하셨습니다. 또한, 그들은 죄를 용서받고, 건강과 힘을 지니며, 그들의 가족이 축복을 받고, 그들 영혼에 구원을 가져올 것이라고 약속하십니다. 이러한 약속들이 이루어질 때, 우리가 느끼는 부담은 빛과 기쁨으로 바뀌고, 복음을 따르는 생활이 더는 의무가 아닌 축복이 될 것입니다. 결국, 이것이 2018년 비전의 근간입니다. 또한, 지역 계획이 두 가지 중요한 우선순위로 이루어진 이유이기도 합니다.
첫 번째 우선순위는 복음을 전파하고 개개인의 개심을 강화하는 것입니다. 방금 드린 말씀을 거듭 말씀드리면, 우리에게는 새로운 개종자의 개종만이 아니라 지도자와 회원들의 개심도 필요합니다. 우리 마음속 깊이 복음을 뿌리를 내리게 한다 함은 우리가 자신의 부름과 가족에 대한 책임을 세상의 방법으로 행하지 않는다는 의미이며, 달성하거나 보여주기 위한 목표라는 관점으로 행하지 않는다는 의미입니다. 대신 우리는 사랑으로 모든 일을 행할 것입니다. 우리는 이러한 방법으로 회원들의 지속적인 교회 활동을 돕고, 그들을 교회로 다시 데려올 것입니다.
우리는 세상이 보는 대로가 아니라, 하나님께서 보시는 대로 다른 사람들을 바라보아야 합니다. 또한, 우리는 하나님께서 우리를 그분의 손안에 든 강력한 도구로 보시는 것처럼 우리 자신을 바라보아야 합니다. 개인적인 개심의 참 부분은 먼저 하나님께서 보시는 대로 다른 사람들을 바라보고, 그 후에 하나님 아버지의 방법대로 그들을 보살피는 것임을 이해하는 것이 매우 중요합니다. 또한, 하나님께서 보시는 대로 우리 자신을 바라보고, 그 역할을 받아들여야 하며, 스스로 가지는 두려움으로 인해 좌절하지 말아야 합니다. 자신의 약점 때문에 혹은 자신이 부적합하다고 여겨 움츠러들어서는 안 됩니다. 우리 각자는 나아가 복음을 전파해야만 합니다.
두 번째 우선순위로, 우리는 앞에서 말씀드렸다시피, 교회 회원들을 도와 그들의 부담을 덜어줌으로써 교회의 회원이 되는 것이 그들에게 축복이 되기를 바랍니다. 우리는 사람들이 복음에 따라 생활함으로써 매일 기쁨을 경험하기를 바랍니다. 핵심은 매일 경험하는 것입니다.
사람들의 개인적인 삶과 온 세상은 불확실함과 불안으로 가득 차 있습니다. 우리는 사람들이 복음을 통해 삶에서 좌절과 두려움이 사라지고 깊은 평안을 느끼는 축복을 매일 경험하기를 바랍니다. 그리스도께서는 우리가 이 세상에서 환난을 당하나 두려워하지 말라며 다음과 같이 말씀하셨습니다. “내가 세상을 이기었노라 평안을 너희에게 끼치노니 곧 나의 평안을 너희에게 주노라 내가 너희를 고아와 같이 버려두지 아니하[리라]” 이것이 바로 비전입니다. 하나님께서는 모든 나라와 만물의 운명을 지배하십니다. 그분과 그분의 우선순위를 온전히 신뢰하는 것이 바로 우리가 해야 할 일입니다. 우리가 그분의 우선순위대로 행할 때, 그분께서는 우리에게 무슨 일이 일어나든 평화를 축복해 주실 것입니다. 만사가 순조로운 것이라는 의미는 아닙니다. 폭풍 가운데서도 평온할 것이라는 의미입니다. 그분은 우리가 잃은 모든 것이 그분의 권능과 속죄로 온전하게 되리라 약속하십니다. 그분은 충실하고 개심한 자들을 위로받지 못한 채로 버려두지 아니하리라고 확언하셨습니다. 이 약속은 우리 매일의 삶 속에서 유효합니다.
—본부 청녀 회장 보니 엘 오스카슨 자매님은 지난 대회에서 자녀들과 상호 향상 모임에 관해 말씀했습니다. 자녀들이 “상호 향상 모임에 왜 가야 하죠?”라고 묻곤 했을 때, 자매님은 “왜 상호 향상 모임에 무언가를 얻기 위해 간다고 생각하니?”라고 대답했습니다. 우리는 기쁨을 경험하기 위해 어떻게 편안하고 익숙한 상태에서 벗어날 수 있을까요?
게이 회장: 복음은 언제나 사람들을 편안하고 익숙한 상태에서 벗어나게 만듭니다. 편안하고 익숙한 상태에 있다는 의미는 여러분 자신의 계명이나 지혜로 살아가려 한다는 뜻입니다. 그리스도를 따르려면 세상에 맞서야 하므로 편안한 것이 아닙니다. 기독교인이 된다는 것은 여러분이 편안하고 익숙한 상태에서 벗어나야 함을 의미합니다. 여러분은 세상의 방법과는 다른 것들을 행해야 합니다. 주님의 방법은 세상의 방법과는 거리가 멉니다. 구주께서는 그 점을 분명히 해두셨습니다. 그분께서는 여러분이 자기 자신이나 인간으로부터 해결책을 찾으려 한다면 자신을 잃을 것이라고 수차례 말씀하셨습니다. 우리는 다른 사람에게 봉사함으로써 자기 자신을 구원합니다. 그분은 베드로에게 “너는 돌이킨 후에” 네 형제를 굳게 하라고 말씀하셨습니다.
선교 사업은 바로 다른 사람들을 굳게 하는 일입니다. 꼭 전임 선교사로 봉사해야만 할 수 있는 일이 아닙니다. 선교 사업에는 여러 가지 유형이 있습니다. 선교 사업이란 성찬식에서 교회에 처음 방문한 사람 옆에 함께 앉는 것입니다. 어려움을 겪고 있는 사람들에게 가정 복음 교육과 방문 교육을 하고 친구가 되어주는 것입니다. 제가 아는 모든 사람은 가족 중 누군가가 어떤 식으로든 어려움을 겪고 있습니다. 여러분이 가족을 사랑하고 봉사한다면 여러분도 선교사입니다. 전임 선교사 프로그램은 단지 선교 사업의 일부에 지나지 않습니다. 지역 회장단이 회원 선교사가 되는 것에 관해 말씀드릴 때는 그야말로 여러분이 최소한 다른 사람들을 굳게 하라고 권유하는 것입니다. 선교 사업을 그렇게 이해하면, 여러분 주위에 있는 사람들을 도울 다른 많은 방법을 찾게 될 것입니다. 다른 사람들과 교회가 여러분에게 가져다주는 축복을 이야기하는 가운데 기쁨을 맛볼 것입니다. 그것이 바로 선교 사업입니다. 가족 중 한 명과 상점으로 걸어가면서 복음이 여러분에게 가져다주는 축복에 대해 간증을 나누려고 할 것입니다. 다른 사람들에게 복음이 어떻게 여러분의 삶을 축복해 주었는지 이야기하십시오. 선교 사업은 단지 매일 나가서 침례 받을 사람들을 찾는 것만이 아닙니다. 그것은 또한 이미 복음을 접했던 가족과 친구, 저활동 회원을 굳게 하고 구조하는 일입니다.
우리는 어떻게 다른 사람들을 굳게 할지에 관한 비전을 넓힐 회원이 필요합니다. 결국, 그리스도께서 사도들에게 자신을 사랑하는지 물은 후에 주셨던 마지막 가르침은 “내 양을 치라 내 양을 먹이라”였습니다.
우리는 모두 그분의 양을 먹이라, 다른 사람을 굳게 하라는 말이 무슨 의미인지 스스로 상고해 보아야 합니다. 여러분은 홀로 앉아서 자신의 의로움을 전파할 수 없습니다. 다른 사람들과 소통하면서 그들을 먹여야 합니다. 사람들은 다양한 방법으로 영양분을 받습니다. 그들은 하나님의 선한 말씀으로 양육되어야 합니다. 또한, 여러분의 간증으로 양육되어야 합니다. 그들은 하나님의 말씀과 의식들이 어떻게 여러분의 삶에 영향을 미쳤는지를 알아야 합니다. 우리가 이러한 일을 행할 때, 선교 사업을 하는 것입니다.
사람들이 교회 건물로 들어올 때 그들을 맞이하는 것과 같은 단순한 일도 선교 사업입니다. 모든 사람은 환영받아야 합니다. 교회의 모든 청남과 청녀는 교회에 오는 모든 이들을 맞이할 수 있습니다. 그것도 선교 사업입니다. 물론 성찬식 말씀 중에 여러 가지 경험에 관해 간증을 나눌 수도 있습니다.
제가 나고야에 있을 때, 한 어린 후기 성도 고등학생이 세상에 자신의 빛을 발하기 위해 커다란 용기를 내었으며, 그로 인해 크나큰 축복을 받은 일에 대해 말씀하는 것을 들었습니다. 교회 회원이었던 그 여학생은 항상 음식 축복 기도를 드렸지만, 다른 학생들이 많이 있는 학교 식당에서도 기도해야 하는지 확신이 서지 않았습니다. 이를 깊이 생각하던 차에 다음과 같은 깨달음을 얻었습니다. “나는 선교사가 되어 복음을 나눌 수 있어. 교회 회원으로서 다른 사람들에게 모범을 보이기 위해 음식 축복 기도를 해야지.” 음식 축복 기도는 누구나 할 수 있습니다. 이 어린 자매는 곧바로 친구들에게 가서 자신은 후기 성도 교회 회원으로서 항상 음식에 대해 기도를 하도록 배웠으며, 음식을 먹기 전에 감사 기도를 드릴 것이라고 말했습니다. 아무도 그녀를 놀리지 않았습니다. 실제로 친구들은 점심시간에 그녀가 앉아서 음식을 축복할 때까지 기다려주었습니다. 이렇게 아주 단순한 방법으로 여러분은 자신의 빛을 발하며, 여러 삶에 영향을 미치게 됩니다.
모든 회원은 선교사가 될 수 있습니다. 사람들은 스테이크 활동 모임에서 활동사진을 찍어서 “교회 저녁 식사에서, 또는 스포츠 활동에서 즐거운 시간을 보내고 있어요. 다음 기회에 와 보세요!”라고 소셜 미디어에 올릴 수도 있습니다. 그것이 선교 사업입니다. 그렇게 세상에 여러분의 빛을 밝히는 것입니다. 선교 사업은 가만히 앉아서 “선교사들에게 소개해 줄 사람을 찾아야 해.”라고 말하는 것만이 아닙니다. 그것은 단지 일부분일 뿐입니다. 저활동 회원과 대다수의 새로운 개종자, 그리고 활동 회원이기는 하지만 강한 간증이 없는 많은 이들에게 우리의 개인적인 선교 사업이라는 도움의 손길이 필요합니다. 우리는 서로를 굳게 해야 합니다. 그것이 선교 사업이며, 사람들은 이를 통해 큰 기쁨을 발견할 것입니다. 왜냐하면, 주께서는 여러분이 그렇게 할 때 여러분의 삶에 평안과 기쁨이라는 축복과 더불어 많은 축복을 부어주리라고 약속하셨기 때문입니다.
다른 사람들에게 봉사하는 가운데 자신을 잃는 자들은 기쁨을 발견할 것입니다. 그것이 하늘의 율법입니다. 슬픔과 눈물이 사라지리라는 뜻은 아니지만, 주께서 주시는 기쁨과 평안함이 가득할 것입니다.
—대단히 감사합니다.
게이 회장: 질문에 대한 대답이 좀 장황했군요.
—저는 고등학생 소녀 이야기가 참 좋았습니다.
이제 높은 기대치와 “위대한 사랑”에 대해 이야기를 나눠보겠습니다. 우리에게 생소한 말인데요. 높은 기대치라는 말은 여러 번 들어보았지만, 위대한 사랑이라는 말은 생소합니다. 지역 계획에 포함되어 있는데, 우리가 더 잘 이해하도록 이 두 용어의 관계를 조금 더 설명해 주시겠습니까?
게이 회장: 주께서 기대하시는 바를 상고할 때마다, 우리는 종종 원대하거나 높은 목표를 세운 후에 이를 성취해 나가기 시작합니다. 이 또한 성취를 관리하고 이에 접근하는 세상의 방법입니다. 저는 사업가였는데, 업계에서는 매출 등과 관련하여 삼 개년 내지 오 개년 계획을 세운 다음 그 목표를 성취하기 위한 실행 계획을 만듭니다. 그러고는 공격적으로 밀어붙이고, 종종 엄격하게 측정하면서 각종 숫자를 장황하게 검토합니다. 기쁨을 주는 일이 전혀 아니지요. 수시로 대치와 긴장감, 의무, 두려움을 강하게 느끼게 됩니다. 우리는 교회에 와서도 너무나도 자주 주님의 방법이 아닌 세상의 방법대로 행하려 합니다. 교회에서는 목표를 위한 목표를 세우지 않습니다. 우리 자신이나 발전을 측정하는 그래프 같은 것도 없습니다. 중요한 것은 바로 보살피는 것입니다. 우리는 예수 그리스도의 복음에 관해 보살피는 자가 되도록 부름받습니다. 우리는 예수 그리스도에 관해 증인이 되도록 부름받습니다. 우리는 그분의 이름을 받들고, 그분의 계명을 지키며 항상 그분을 기억해야 합니다. 다시 말하자면, 예수 그리스도께서는 우리가 우리의 본성을 변화시키기를 기대하십니다. 이것이 복음의 높은 기대치로, 육에 속한 사람 이상의 무언가가 되는 것입니다. 우리는 하나님의 아들과 딸이 되어야 합니다. 이는 대단히 높은 기대치입니다. 우리는 다름 아닌 우리 자신의 본성을 변화시켜야 합니다. 하지만, 어떻게 우리가 이 일을 해냅니까? 구주께서는 “내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 서로 사랑”함으로써 그 일을 이룰 수 있다고 가르치셨습니다.
예수 그리스도께서는 속죄하시던 날 밤에 당신을 부인했고, 배반했으며, 잠이 들고, 당신을 버린 자들의 발을 씻기셨습니다. 그분은 또한 당신에게 침을 뱉고, 당신의 손에 못을 박은 모든 이들을 용서하셨습니다. 그날 밤, 그분은 세상의 방법을 영원히 뛰어넘는 높은 수준의 방법을 나타내 보이셨습니다. 그리스도께서는 그분의 표준이 우리가 우리 자신을 사랑하는 것처럼 다른 사람을 사랑하는 것이 아니라 그분이 우리를 사랑한 것 같이 우리도 서로 사랑하는 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러므로 우리가 어떤 사람이 되어야 하는지에 대한 비전을 세울 때 서로 사랑하고, 서로에게 봉사하며, 서로의 발을 씻겨 줌으로써 그 비전을 이루어야만 합니다. 이 과정에서 두 가지 승리를 거두게 됩니다. 1) 여러분이 봉사하는 사람들의 삶에 영향을 미치며, 2) 그리스도께서 여러분의 마음을 변화시키시고 커다란 기쁨을 가져다주십니다.
사랑이 없이 기대치만 있다면, 우리에게는 의무감만 남을 뿐입니다. 우리는 세상의 방식으로 운영하면 결국 어떻게 되는지 알고 있습니다. 그리스도께서는 무언가 다른 방법으로 행하도록 권유하셨습니다. 십이사도 정원회의 닐 엘 앤더슨 장로님은 우리가 높은 기대치와 위대한 사랑을 지닌다면 기적이 일어나리라고 가르치셨습니다.
저는 우리가 지역 비전을 받아들이고 높은 기대치와 위대한 사랑으로 계획을 세운다면 기적을 경험하게 되리라 믿어 의심치 않습니다. 그런 연유로 저는 이 지역에 관한 선지자의 말씀이 성취될 수 있다고 믿습니다. 우리는 이 지역의 모든 사람에게 위대한 사랑으로 감동을 줄 수 있습니다. 이것이 매일 하는 봉사로 이어지게만 하면 됩니다. 2018년 계획은 전부 사랑을 통해 보살핌으로써 마음과 영혼을 감동하게 하는 일입니다.

President Gay Interview – on Prophetic Promises and the Vision of the Area Plan DEC. 8, 2017
The Area Plan 2018 was published in the February issue in the Liahona local page, and each local unit had an opportunity to learn about it on the first Sunday in January. There would be support material provided to the local page to help us understand the Area Plan throughout the year. This is the first article in the series. We interviewed Elder Gay about the vision and area priority of the Area Plan. (Editor)
SY: It’s has been a little over four months since you’ve been presiding in this area. Can you tell us a little about what impressions you have after interacting with the members in this area?
PG: Members in this area are the salt-of-the-earth. Our people have great love for our Savior, great love for their families, and a great desire to do good. What’s amazing to me is the great humility and kindness of the people in all parts of our area. In Japan, in Korea, in the Micronesia Islands our people are truly kind and good people. They’re so respectful and so willing to serve. All are trying to do good things. I love being here. I truly love the people. Our members have only shown my wife and me great kindness and love since we’ve been here.
SY: Now, I would like to ask you about President Eyring’s prophecy. You mentioned that you met with president Eyring before you came here when you were called to preside over this area. So, if you don’t mind, tell us about that occasion. What impressions did you have?
PG: President Eyring called me to serve as the Area President, last March, prior to general conference. Interestingly, a month before he called my wife and me, I received a deep impression in my office in Salt Lake that I was going to be called to come here. That very evening I told my wife that about my impression and how I believed our assignment was going to be changed to the Asia North Area, living in Tokyo. When President Eyring extended the call a month later I shared with him my previous experience about the impression. President Eyring said that God truly is in charge and does guide and direct His Church.
After President Eyring called us, he said, “This area is very special to me. Years ago, I gave a prophecy about Japan.” He then quoted his prophecy without looking at anything and talked about how he felt that there would be a time of great growth in the Church in the area. He said he believed the growth would arise from members here becoming more deeply engaged by letting their light and their voices shine before the world. He was very, very confident that the Lord intends to fulfill His word. As I sat there with him, I felt very strongly the Spirit telling me that an important reason why I was assigned here was to help this prophecy become realized. Thinking back, it was a wonderful conversation.
SY: What you just said reminded me about 3 Nephi. The people who had seen the sign of the birth of Jesus Christ met with Him 33 years later. And among them were a generation who became adults by the time the Savior visited them in their land. They probably knew and kept the prophecy as revealed in their mind since they were little.
PG: I just think it is interesting that when President Eyring first spoke about his impressions of the growth that would take place in this area it was to the missionaries in 1998. At that time, he told them that it would be the next generation of missionaries that would cause this prophecy to take root. That generation would be now. His prophecy is consistent with a pattern with that comes from the Lord. The Lord often announces what will happen, as he did with the Nephites, and then lets us have a period of time to prepare and get ready. I believe in Asia North the Lord sent His voice through His servant years ago to prepare hearts of the people and to establish centers of strength through which we can now work. We ought to all realize though, that the time of preparation is over. It is now time to act. This what the Lord expects—it is our time to be His instrument to help His hastening.
We have to realize though that this is just not a missionary effort and it’s not just a member effort. We have to be working together because it’s going to take both members and missionaries working together to fulfill what the Lord intends to occur in all the area.
SY: To work together as one united body, what area we can achieve and how?
PG: It’s the Lord’s desire to bless all his children both, living and dead, to receive the blessings of the gospel. To help the Lord accomplish this we need to be united in the vision of His intended work. In the scriptures, in the Old Testament, in Proverbs, it says: “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Each of us must get and become united in the vision of the Lord’s work and plan for us at this time.
Today we must be about preaching the gospel. The scriptures ask all members this question: “Unto what are ye ordained?” Or in other words, what does the Lord expect of us once we become a faithful member of the Church? He answered that question saying, it is to preach His gospel by the Spirit. Now ask yourself, “What does it mean to preach His gospel?” I believe it means we must be a teacher of His truths and a witness of His mission and invite others to do likewise. Today we are asking all members and missionaries in Asia North to share His divine truth and their witness of the Savior and His work and to invite all others to come unto Christ. This is why the words, “Come unto Christ” are the first words of the vision in the Area plan.
As members of the Church we are children of the Abraham. As such, we are under covenant to share the gospel. Simply put, the vision of the area plan, is to fulfill our covenant that we have to invite others to come unto Christ and to invite all to become converted, not just members of record. We need to help get the gospel deep down into all hearts. As that happens, living the gospel becomes a joy rather an obligation or burden. People who have the gospel deep in their hearts find, feel and understand the promises of the gospel. They are comforted by the Spirit. As we truly live and share the gospel, the Lord sends great blessings and promises to each and every person. He promises that they will be protected, that He will go before their face. He promises that their sins will be forgiven, that they will have health and strength, that their families will be blessed, and that they’ll bring salvation to their souls. As these promises take hold, light and joy replace burdens felt and gospel living ceases to be a duty but a benediction. In essence, this is what underlies our vision statement for 2018. This is also why we set the Area plan with two important priorities.
The first priority is to spread the gospel and strengthen individual conversion. To re-iterate what I just said, we need conversion including converted leaders and converted members not just new converts. Getting the gospel deep down into our heart means we will not do our callings and family responsibility in a worldly manner or from a perspective of goals to be achieved or to be seen. Rather we will do all we do out of love. That’s how we’re going to retain people, that’s how we’re going to bring people back.
We have to see people as God sees them, not as the world sees them. And we have to see ourselves as God sees us, as powerful instruments in His hands. It is critical to understand that a real part of individual conversion is to see others as God sees them and then administer to them as Heavenly Father would. It also is to see ourselves as God sees us and to step to that role and not be crippled by our own fears. We can’t be frozen by our own weaknesses or perceived inadequacies. Each of us must go out and spread the gospel.
As a second priority, as previously discussed, we desire to lighten individual burdens by helping church membership become a blessing. We want people to experience joy daily through gospel living. The key thing is daily.
There is a lot of uncertainty and angst throughout the world and in people’s individual lives. We want the gospel to bring a daily blessing of removing frustration and fear with a deep sense of peace in people’s lives. Christ said in this world we would have tribulation but to not fear. He said, “I have overcome the world. Peace I give unto you. Peace I leave with you. I will not leave you comfortless.” That’s the vision. God controls the destinies of all nations and all things. What we need to do is completely trust in Him and His priorities. As we do His priorities, He will then bless us with peace--no matter what’s going on. It doesn’t mean everything will be easy, it means we will have the calm amidst the storms. He promises all our losses shall be made whole by His power and His Atonement. He has assured all His faithful and converted I will not leave you comfortless. This promise is available for each and every day of our lives.
SY: Sister Bonnie L. Oscarson mentioned something about her children and Mutual in the last conference. She said her children would ask her, “Why do we have to go to Mutual?” She replied, “What makes you think you go to Mutual because of what you get out of it?” How can we get out of our comfort zone to experience joy?
PG: The gospel is all about taking people out of their comfort zone. Being in your comfort zone means you’re trying to live by your own commandments or wisdom. Following Christ is not a comfortable thing because it opposes the world. To be a Christian, means you have to come out of your comfort zone. You have to do things other than in the world’s way. The Lord’s way rarely has anything to do with the world’s way. The Savior was very clear on that. Multiple times He said if you’re going to look to yourself or man for your solutions, you’re going to lose yourself. We save our self by serving others. To Peter he said, “When you are converted” then turn to strengthening others.
This is what missionary work is about, strengthening others. It’s not, necessarily, going out like full-time missionaries. There’s are lots of forms of missionary work. It’s sitting next to somebody who is visiting the church in sacrament meeting. It’s doing home teaching and visiting teaching to people who are struggling, and being a friend. I don’t know anybody that does not have family members struggling somewhere. If you love and serve your family, you’re being a missionary. The program of full time missionary service is just one part of missionary work. When the Area Presidency talks about being a member missionary, we are inviting you simply, at a minimum, to be someone who strengthens others. If you see missionary work in that light, you’ll see many different ways in which you can help all those around you. You will find joy in talking to people about the blessings that the Church brings to you. That’s missionary work. You will bear testimony about the blessings that the gospel brings you as you’re with walking a family member to the store. Describe to others how the gospel has blessed your life. Let people know that. Missionary work isn’t just about going out every day and finding people to be baptized. It’s also truly about strengthening and rescuing family, friends, less actives who are already part of the gospel
We need members to broaden their vision of how they strengthen others. After all, the last teaching Christ gave to the apostles, after He asked them if they loved him, was: “Feed my sheep. Feed my lambs.”
All should ponder for themselves what it means to feed His lambs? To strengthen others? You can’t do that by sitting alone and proclaiming your own righteousness. You have to engage with other people and feed them. People are fed in many different ways. They need to be nourished by the good word of God. They need to be nourished by your testimony. They need to know how God’s word has impacted your life, how the ordinances have impacted your life. As we do these things, we are doing missionary work.
Simple things, like greeting people as they come in the building is missionary work. Everybody should be greeted. All the young men and all the young women in the church can greet everybody who come to church. That’s missionary work. We can certainly share testimonies in our sacrament talks about our different experiences.
I was in Nagoya where I listened to a young LDS high school student talk about the great courage she showed to let her light shine before the world and the great blessing that came from it. As a Church member, she had always blessed her food, but she wasn’t sure she should bless her food in the high school lunch room, when other students were around. As she pondered this, she realized, “I can be a missionary and share the gospel. I will bless my food as an example to others of being a member of the Church.” Everybody can bless food. This young sister soon went and told her friends that she’d always been taught to say a blessing over her food as an LDS church member, and that she was going to say grace over her food. Nobody made fun of her; in fact, her friends, at lunch time, came to the point that no one would eat until she sat down and blessed the food. That’s letting your light shine in a very simple way and it impacts lives.
Every member can be a missionary. People can take pictures of themselves at a stake event and post it and say, “We’re having fun at a church dinner or a church sports event; maybe next time you’d like to come!” That’s missionary work. That’s putting your light before the world. Missionary work is not just sitting down and saying, “I have to find a referral for the missionaries.” That’s only part of it. There are so many people that need our individual missionary helping hand including less actives, many of our new converts, and many of those who are active but don’t have strong testimonies. We must strengthen one another. That’s missionary work and people will find great joy by doing it because the Lord promises if you do so He will openly bring blessings to your life, including the blessing of peace and joy.
Anyone who will lose themselves in the service of others, will find joy. It’s a law of heaven. It doesn’t mean it’s without sorrow or tears, but there’s joy and peace. That’s what the Savior brings.
SY: Thank you so much.
PG: That was a long-winded answer to your question.
SY: Oh, I love the story about the high school girl.
Let’s talk about high expectation and “high love.” This is new to us. We’ve heard of high expectations a lot of times, but high love is very new to us. This is in the area plan. Could you help us understand a little bit more about the relationship between the two terms?
PG: Often times as we ponder what the Lord expects, we set high objectives or lofty goals and then set about achieving them. This too is how the world manages also approaches achievement. I come from a business environment. In the business world, you manage by putting together three- and five-year plans like for sales and then identify action plans to achieve the goals. Next you manage to them by aggressively pursuing, measuring often rigidly sitting in lengthy reviews of the numbers. That creates little joy. It most often creates a high sense of confrontation, tension, obligation and fear. Too often, we come into the Church trying to do things the world’s way and not the Lord’s way. Everything in the Church is not about a goal to be filled. It’s not about a graph on which we measure ourselves, or our progress. It’s about a ministry to be completed. We are called to be ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We called to be a witness of Jesus Christ. We are to take upon us His name, keep His commandments and always remember Him. In other words, Jesus Christ expects us to change our very natures. This is the higher expectations of the gospel, that we become something other than the natural man. We are to become a son and daughter of God. That’s a very high expectation. We are expected to change our very natures. But how do we do this? The Savior taught us to do it by “loving others as I have loved you.”
On the night of His atonement, Jesus Christ washed the feet of those who denied Him, who betrayed Him and who fell asleep and abandoned Him. He also forgave, all of those who spit upon Him, and who drove the nails into His hands. That night, He forever showed a higher way than the world’s way: He said my standard isn’t that you love others as you love yourselves, but that you love others as I have loved you. So, as we raise the vision of what we need to be as people, we must do it by loving each other, by serving each other, by washing each other’s feet. In this process two victories occur: 1) you affect the lives of those you serve, and 2) Christ changes your heart and gives you great joy.
If we just have expectations, without love, we just have duty. We have the world’s management and we know where that goes. Christ was inviting us to do something else. Elder Neil L. Andersen, of the Quorum of the Twelve, has taught that when we have high expectations and high love, miracles occur.
I fully believe we will witness a miracle if we undertake our area vision and plan with high expectations and high love. It’s why I believe the prophetic word for this area can be fulfilled. We can touch all the people within this area with great love. We just need to put this into our daily service. The 2018 plan is all about touching hearts and souls by doing a ministry of service through love.
SY: I understand. So you want us to use the area plan as, not a checklist, but like a liahona. We need to study and ponder and come up with our own way to act upon it?
PG: That’s a great question and an absolute critical insight. We’re not trying to put a detailed road map in front of people. The gospel of Jesus Christ is based on revelation, modern day revelation. God does nothing except as He speaks through his prophets. He will also speak to us in our own stewardships. As we pray, listen, ponder and act, we open the door of revelation of how to move forward fulfill what God would have us to realize His vision for this area at this time. Only the Holy Ghost can teach each of us all things we must do.
The Area Plan is an invitation to get revelation. Missionary work is a revelatory work. The work of the gospel is a revelatory work. As we sit in council with each other, the presiding person, the bishop, the stake president, the area president, none of us has all the answers. All the people sitting together all have different insights and understanding; as we share together we’ll get more revelation. So we want wards sitting together in councils. We want families sitting together in councils. We want people saying their prayers, we want them reading their scriptures and using the scriptures and likening them to themselves and then acting upon the impressions. If we are to move the work of the Church to where He expects it to go in this area, such revelation is both necessary and required.
The Holy Ghost will teach me to do one small thing and someone else to do one small thing and all that will fulfill the vision. That is really how we see it. We need people to seek the guidance of heaven in doing everything because if we try to prescribe it, we will fail.
SY: That is a great insight. Thank you. .
SY: If you’d wrap it up with your testimony…
PG: I think I’ve given you my testimony, but I will say this: everything that’s happening right now is happening for a reason and a purpose. God is in the details in His work here. This 2018 area plan and vision that has come by revelation. Now is the time for the people living in this area to know that the Lord’s hand is upon the work here. I believe that with all my heart. I know that this is His work. I know that He’s guiding it. And I know that He will profoundly bless everyone who invests their souls, their hearts and their prayers to take an active part in the vision of this plan. He will open miracles in your lives. I promise that as His servant and assigned leader in this area. I promise as you seek to do the Lord’s work and priorities and lay your burden upon His shoulders He will give you a hand through those burdens and even make them light as you do His work. You will feel great joy, both in your own life and through the lives of those you bless. The great testimony coming out of the ministry performed by sons of Mosiah who suffered much affliction was inexpressible joy. Joy in the gospel.
I am very humble and grateful to be serving here. I deeply appreciate the love that has been shown me. I feel richly blessed. I believe with all my heart that my wife and I were sent here by divine will. I also believe and know that God’s hand is upon this area at this time. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
